Preventing Dizziness During Pregnancy

Dizziness is especially common during pregnancy. During the early parts of pregnancy, those hormonal changes that your body is going through can cause your blood vessels to change, which ultimately leads to a feeling of dizziness. Later on, the position of your baby can affect the flow of blood through your body, which can also lead to a feeling of dizziness. For many women, dizziness is just part of the pregnancy experience.

Generally speaking, dizziness during pregnancy isn’t dangerous. As long as your blood pressure doesn’t fall too low, or as long as you don’t feel unbalanced and become a risk for falling, a little bit of light headedness isn’t a big deal. That being said, there are a number of different things that you can do in order to reduce or prevent dizziness during pregnancy.

Here are some tips that may help to reduce that overall dizzy feeling while you’re pregnant:

  • Avoid standing for too long at one time. If you need to stand for longer periods, try to make sure that you move your feet around on a regular basis in order to help your circulation. Sit down for at least a few minutes every hour or so, as well.
  • Take care when getting up and lying down. If you’re sitting, sit up slowly. The same goes for lying down. It’s especially important to be careful when you’re rising to a standing position from the floor, for example when you’re rising up out of the bathtub.
  • Watch your diet. Make sure that you eat on a regular basis. Don’t go too long between your meals. Snack throughout the day rather than eating larger meals. This may also help with morning sickness.
  • Avoid getting overheated. Warm baths and showers can, in some cases, make you more light headed.
  • After the midpoint of your pregnancy, don’t lie down on your back.
  • Make sure you are wearing clothes that are loose and comfortable, and that they aren’t restricting.
  • If you feel like you might fall or have severe dizziness, make sure you talk to your doctor about the problem.
